In the sauna, there are rules that serve the safety and comfort of all sauna participants. Be sure to familiarize yourself with them before your first visit to the sauna. This way, you will feel confident and safe. You will take care of your health, maintain hygiene, and respect the peace of others. Here’s how to prepare for your first time in the sauna.

Have a light meal

First: pay attention to your diet. In the heat of preparations, it’s easy to forget about it. And it largely determines how you feel while sauna bathing.

Before entering the sauna, you should not be hungry or overeaten. For this reason, have your last meal about 1.5-2 hours before your visit. Your body will have time to digest the food. Especially if you choose a filling but easily digestible dish. This could be oatmeal with fruits, scrambled eggs, chicken salad, or a turkey sandwich. A good choice might also be pudding or sweet pancakes.

Additionally, remember to stay hydrated. Try to drink at least 1 liter of water before leaving home.

Prepare your body for sauna bathing

Further preparations await you at the location. Start by thoroughly cleansing your body.

Take a shower and dry your skin thoroughly.
If you haven't removed your makeup before leaving home - do it now. Otherwise, makeup that runs due to moisture and high temperature can irritate your face skin and eyes.
Remove jewelry and watches.

Take care of necessary equipment

According to tradition, saunas should be used naked and without flip-flops (leave them at a safe distance from the sauna entrance).

However, the first time in the sauna in the nude may be awkward. It’s worth acquiring a sauna kilt or a swimsuit made of natural material. In this case, you do not need a towel for covering, but keep one to place under your body. If you decide to sauna in the nude, take three towels with you: one for under your body, one for covering, and one for your feet. Some also opt for a special cap to prevent overheating of the head. If in doubt about what equipment to bring to the sauna, check the regulations or ask the staff for help.

Respect other sauna participants

During your first visit to the sauna, take a place on the lowest bench, as the temperature there is the lowest. If there are other people with you, do not try to engage them in casual conversation. The sauna should be quiet. It's a time to listen to your body, turn inward, and release tension. If you come with a loved one, you may allow yourselves a short and quiet exchange of words, but make sure you do not disturb others.

Out of respect for others, do not pour water on the stones or add aromatic oils without agreement. As long as you feel good, stay in the sauna for the recommended time to avoid unnecessary commotion from frequently entering and exiting.

Remember the three phases of sauna bathing

One session should last no more than 10 minutes (especially if it’s your first time in the sauna). After this time, leave the cabin and gradually, mindfully cool your body under the shower, starting from your feet. Then dry your skin and rest on a lounge chair for fifteen minutes. Remember to hydrate!

If you feel up to it, you can repeat the session. Again, include the three phases of sauna bathing: heating in the sauna, cooling under the shower, resting in the designated area.
